Half way between Berchtesgaden and Passau, on the border with Austria and shortly before the spot where the Salzach flows into the River Inn, lies the medieval town of Burghausen.
Located atop a long, narrow mountain ridge above the historic Old Town, is a castle built by the Dukes of Wittelsbach.
It is the longest (1,034 m) and one of the best preserved castles in all of Europe.
