The Heart of Bavaria
In the enchanting Alpine foothills of Upper Bavaria, between Munich, Passau, Salzburg and close to Lake Chiemsee, lies Altötting - the "Heart of Bavaria".  The town has been the spiritual center of Bavaria for more than 1250 years and Germany's most important site of pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin Mary for over 500 years.
The destination for the in excess of 1 million pilgrims annually, is the so-called "Black Madonna" in the octagon of the Chapel of Grace. The small, early-Christian sacred building, presumably dating from around 700AD, sits in the midst of a broad chapel square bordered by buildings of the Baroque era.
