During 2009, the River Salzach between Bergheim-Muntigl and Oberndorf underwent some "remodeling" in order to put a check on ongoing erosion and deepening of the river. South of Oberndorf, the riverbed was actually widened for the same reason, bringing the wetlands closer to the river and revitalizing the entire river system. As a consequence, the route of the cycle path was also changed on the 4 kilometers prior to Oberndorf. Now it no longer runs as straight as a die along the banks of the Salzach, instead taking a new route on the edge of the wetlands via Weitwörth to Oberndorf. The signs for the Tauern Cycle Path have also been changed to reflect the new route.
The alternate route originally created as a detour around the construction efforts in 2009, which leaves the River Salzach in Muntigl (6 km north of Salzburg), and crosses meadows and fields to Anthering, continuing on via Weitwörth to Oberndorf, has been preserved, and will offer an interesting variant along the Tauern Cycle Path in future. It adds 1.5 km, but is paved throughout.
