Hohensalzburg Fortress towers above Salzburg's historic Old Town, with its broad squares and winding lanes: and the most beautiful views of all can be enjoyed on the banks of the Salzach right from the cycle path itself.
The Tauern Cycle Path Loop leaves this "City of Mozart" in a southwesterly direction, taking us to the Salzburg Outdoor Museum in Grossgmain, then via Bad Reichenhall (in Bavaria) upriver alongside the Saalach - with only minimal hills along the way - to Lofer.
Here, a newly constructed stage of the Tauern Cycle Path leads to the Saalach Valley Natural Wonders (Lamprecht's Cave, Seisenberg Gorge, …), before reaching the Zeller See and rejoining the Tauern Cycle Path along the Salzach.
For the return trip to Krimml (66 km), we recommend taking a ride on the Pinzgau Railway from Zell am See to Krimml.
